5. Planning and Production – what’s next?

This blog post discusses how I am going to produce this story into a finalised piece of digital art. This is the fifth and final blog post to read in this production dossier.

What am I going to make?

The plan for this project is to create a graphic novel. I am unsure of what type of layout I will choose yet, but would love to have a full volume 1 prototype by the end of this module. I will use the programme ‘Procreate’ for the iPad and also utilise traditional media to create it. I will have to plan what I produce week by week according to my set story structure. I will try to create at least a page of graphic novel a week, but need to discuss and plan what I think will be reasonable to create as making an entire graphic novel may end up being too big of a project for the time that we have. In this project, my time management planning will be key to its success.

In terms of art style, I have a key vision in mind. I believe that I can bring some freedom to the world of graphic novels and comics. Often, the art styles used in comics are perfectly neat and tidy, I am planning on experimenting with getting a sense of emotion on to the page rather than having perfectly neat illustrations. I might create this by using colour, collaging and abstract illustrations.

Prototypes

As well as creating fully realised character sketches and illustrations, I have produced a couple of prototypes including storyboards and panel plans that I intend to draw up and make into fully realised edited pages of graphic novel. I am extremely proud of these as I feel they turned out really well. I feel like I have really achieved capturing a sense of emotion on the page.

Ren’s mother is murdered and she finds the body.
A more experimental comic panel, playing with perspective and shapes in order to create a specific feel.

Overall, I am very passionate about this story and it’s characters and I am looking forward to beginning the process of crafting it bit by bit.
