3D Character : Colour

In terms of colour pallette I had a pretty strong vision of what colours my character would be. I didn’t want to become stuck to one colour palette though so I experimented with a few different colour ideas.

I knew that I wanted the suit to be different shades of black with black and red shoes, that was an immediate character design feature that I stuck to, I will explain more of her clothes and accessories in a following blog post however in this post I will be discussing her base colours such as her skin and hair.

Initial colour palette and concept

The figure above illustrates my original colour concept for my character. This features red skin, black hair and dark brown horns with extra silver jewellery. I originally thought of these colours as they are the classic demon colours , red and black. If she was to be the daughter of the king of the underworld – she would most likely have red skin and I think that the black hair nicely contrasts with the red. I still wanted to experiment with a few other ideas first though.

Second character colour concept – my least favourite of the 3 experiments

In this design I have swapped a few of the colours around giving her a darker skin tone, red hair and very dark brown horns. I liked this design but it didn’t feel quite right as I don’t feel the colours match her intimidating personality. I also wasn’t sure how much it matched to the fantasy aspect of her.

My final colour palette experiment – taking a completely different approach and humanising her a little bit to see how it would look.

I actually really liked how this colour concept came out. I think she looks intimidating and alluring but at the same time I think she does have a fantasy element to her – she looks like an alien or an elf. I like how I could use shading as makeup to create different effects on her face – however I still feel that this is too far away from my original concept and it doesn’t really show that she is from the underworld.

Overall, I like my initial design best, I like the colour palette and how the red fits in with her personality and heritage. This is the one I will be referencing in my 3D model.
