Zbrush brush experiments

In this weeks lab session we were asked to attempt to model a human figure and experiment with various brushes. I chose the female mannequin model preset and began to model on top of it. Firstly I remeshed the model and created an adaptive skin for it.

Clay buildup- for the basic shape

At the beginning stages I used the simple clay buildup tool to create the basic shape of the head, jawline and brow. Clay buildup is good for modelling the basic shapes of your character and establishing the main shapes.

Trying DamStandard for ears – used clay buyildup for full face

After using clay buildup to build a large portion of the face, I attempted to use DamStandard to build the ears. To me DamStandard just felt like using the clay buildup tool but it felt more precise and I decided to use it to refine the face.

DamStandard carved out the ears.
Flatten to smooth ears down

The flatten brush helped to smooth the ears down so that they sat more flush to the jaw and looked more organic. Flatten seemed to do exactly what it says and it flattened the surfaces that I felt needed to be refined.

I Used the move brush to adjust head shape and size.

The move tool was helpful to move specific parts of my model, for example I used the move brush to lift and enlarge the head after I had modelled all of the facial features.

For most of the body I used a mix of clay buildup and DamStandard

I experimented creating the shapes of the torso with the clay buildup brush. I added bits of clay where they needed to be and smoothed them out. I know anatomy quite well from drawing and being an artist.

The pinch brush is useful for grabbing certain points of clay

I experimented with the pinch brush also. Although I couldn’t see the benefits of the pinch brush with my model, I realise that my final character idea does have horns and this brush would be helpful for pinching those basic shapes.

I used the inflate tool to inflate different parts of the model that were pinching in

The wrists of my model seemed to pinch in a little so I experimented with the inflate tool to try and resize certain parts. This worked really well and after they had been inflated I could build clay on top of them to create a better wrist shape.

I used the same clay build up techniques and came up with this final model. The legs could use a little more work but I mainly focused on the face in this session. Overall I feel that I know a few more useful brushes and I am confident that I could create a good anatomically correct character. I am very happy with the outcome of this lab session.
