Layering and separation

Tufte’s theory of layering and separation suggests that layering visual components can organise data by separating the important parts of information in a graphic (Tufte, 1990, pp.53-67). In this blog post I will be discussing the use of layering and separation in magazine examples. Magazines rely heavily on the use of layering visual components to separate data. Shumi Perhiniak suggests that a key aspect of magazine design is the creation of a hierarchy of information: ‘Do the right pieces of … Continue reading “Layering and separation”

Narratives of space and time

Tufte’s narratives of space and time theory suggests that creating a timeline with changes between each visual can illustrate points well (Tufte, 1990, pp.97-119). In this blog post I will be finding examples of Tufte’s space and time theory in art magazines. Most art magazines are made up of tutorials that rely on changing graphics and visuals to teach the viewer how to draw or create a final product. Muhammad Osama suggests that when writing an effective tutorial it is … Continue reading “Narratives of space and time”

Zbrush brush experiments

In this weeks lab session we were asked to attempt to model a human figure and experiment with various brushes. I chose the female mannequin model preset and began to model on top of it. Firstly I remeshed the model and created an adaptive skin for it. At the beginning stages I used the simple clay buildup tool to create the basic shape of the head, jawline and brow. Clay buildup is good for modelling the basic shapes of your … Continue reading “Zbrush brush experiments”

ZRemesher experiments

In this weeks lab session we were asked to use a zsphere model and to experiment with re-meshing it and creating an adaptive skin. I started with the black bear model and created an adaptive skin. By turning up the DynaMesh resolution and the density, it smoothed out the zspeheres and created an easier skin to work on. I then cleared the canvas and inserted the new adaptive skin model. I used puref to display my found references of black … Continue reading “ZRemesher experiments”

Comparison of small multiples

Tufte’s ‘comparison of small multiples’ theory suggests that if you put similar images with only slight variations in one single field of vision, the viewer will understand cognitively the difference between each image. (Tufte, 1990, pp.67-81) In this blog post I will be discussing Tufte’s comparison of small multiples theory and how it relates to my chosen subject area, magazines. As you can see here, all magazine covers are placed within the viewers field of vision and are all slightly … Continue reading “Comparison of small multiples”

Practising with Z-spheres

This week in our lab we were asked to create an animal of our choice using Z-spheres. I chose to create a pigeon as I thought it would be an easy and simple shape to start off with. It was a little difficult to get my head around, but once I got the hang of moving and arranging the Z-spheres I actually enjoyed myself. This original pigeon model ended up breaking after being smoothed so I had to start again. … Continue reading “Practising with Z-spheres”

Using Dynamesh in Zbrush

This week in our lab session we created a pumpkin. We utilised the dynamesh tool in Zbrush to recalculate and optimise the topology of our models after intense modelling. This week I also tried the masking tool to help model more effectively and I also used the paint tool for the first time to colour in my pumpkin. I gave him some teeth for affect. After I had completed the colouring of him, I built on to his face more … Continue reading “Using Dynamesh in Zbrush”

Use of colour

For my assignment I am investigating how art affects mental wellbeing. I have chosen to create a magazine teaching people the emotional benefits of art and how to utilise it as self care. I will therefore in this research diary be discussing Tufte’s theories in relation to magazine design. In this blog post however I will be focusing on the use of colour in existing mental health magazines and statistics. Edward Tufte theorised that the function of colour in analytical … Continue reading “Use of colour”

Creative Business Moodboard

Our first task for the creative business module is to create a moodboard on a creative business idea that inspires us. Here is my moodboard created on photoshop: My idea is to create a subscription box that is shipped monthly containing art supplies , prints, stickers and more. I love art and being creative so I thought this would be the perfect business for me. I was thinking that each month would have a theme and a prompt that would … Continue reading “Creative Business Moodboard”
