The Bauhaus movement was an incredibly influential 20th century movement that pushed the idea of blending arts and craftsmanship. The key features of Bauhaus are: geometrical forms, bold colour and simplicity. Many things such as architecture, graphic design and fine art were influenced by this movement. This week we were asked to find things around us that we think may have been influenced by the movement. Here are my findings:

Above are my initial sketches based off of the images I took. I focused on copying the designs that I saw and deconstructing the grids of images that I took.
Firstly, I chose to look at my bag. I thought that my ‘Kipling’ bag seemed to be very inspired by Bauhaus. I noticed even the shape of the bag was very geometric and the different pockets were split up into columns and sections. The print is made up of a range of simple shapes and has a very bold colour palette similar to many Bauhaus designs.

I also looked at my university accommodation which is very Bauhaus inspired. The grid is very obvious in this building as the simple square windows are set into columns. I also noticed how although each building looks the same – they are unique and this is created with the use of colours. Each building has a solid bold colour associated with it to differentiate it from the others which is very functional – functionality is a feature that Bauhaus emphasises.

Overall the Bauhaus movement does really inspire me and I think it’s interesting how such a variety of design has been influenced by this movement. There are so many examples of Bauhaus influence all around us.
